Bio:

on lj:
I like to think of LJ as my hat closet. What’s a hat closet? You know… that place where you hang all your hats, those ones you wear everyday, every other day, once a month, or only when Grandma’s coming and you want her to know you really didn’t waste all that money you spent on your education. I wear hats. Lots of hats. And I like to hang them here. Once upon a time, I built a blog into my website, but that wasn’t as fulfilling as I’d thought it would be. I needed people, not just my people but new people, too, and LJ gave me that. Continues to give me that. Ultimately, I embedded my journal within my website to give me the best of both worlds. See? Hats.

on me:
By day and trade, I’m an assistant professor of psychology (PhD, NC State, 2002). I do the traditional academic gig, and I basically look the part (complete with denims and cartoons about evolution taped to the bookcases in my office). I’m also the mother of three daughters, and I'm a writer. That’s three. Hats that is. It’s really the writing that spurred the website and then, later, the journal. LJ was initially intended for character exploration of a secondary character, but the journal has run somewhat amuck in recent months. I’ve given up all pretense of control. I’ve completed three novels in a series called The Witch War Histories, and you can read about those here or on my website. Two ancillary novels are currently in progress. I’ve also completed two chick lit novels, and excerpts of both are available on my website. The complete novels are available via a filter here on LJ.

on my posts & friending:
Nearly everything I post is friends-only. This is due to the sometimes explicit language and/or mature themes presented in my writing. I would, overall, give the journal a PG-13 rating, but I also lock posts for copyright reasons and because I don’t want students inadvertently stumbling across posts without warning. If you are interested in my fiction, feel free to friend. If we seem to have mutual interests, I'll likely friend you back.

commenting:
I’m open to the good and the bad, but please refrain from the ugly. I’m all about the respect. Don’t like something? That’s fine; just say it nicely. We’re all free to disagree, but setting up a round-robin of insults gets us nowhere. It’s kind of like Gandhi said, “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.”

on causes:
There are a few causes about which I am passionate, and two that head the list. If you are on my f-list, you'll frequently see the purple ribbon for domestic violence awareness. Equality Now is an organization dedicated to serving the needs of women worldwide by bring a legal and political end to such practices as female genital mutilation, marital rape, and forced prostitution. Both causes are worthy, and I urge you to consider looking into them yourself. Finally, One.Org is a political action committee dedicated to ending world hunger and the spread of HIV/AIDS. This organization is another that is most worthy of attention. (And I'm off my soapbox now - at least until you enter the labyrinth of my f-locked posts. *winks*)

The Moon is Always Female
Marge Percy

The moon is always female and so
am I although often in this vale
of razorblades I have wished I could
put on and take off my sex like a dress
and why not? Do men always wear their sex
always? The priest, the doctor, the teacher
all tell us they come to their professions
neuter as clams and the truth is
when I work I am pure as an angel
tiger and clear is my eye and hot
my brain and silent all the whining
grunting piglets of the appetites.
For we were priests to the goddesses
to whom were fashioned the first altars
of clumsy stone on stone and leaping animal
in the wombdark caves, long before men
put on skirts and masks to scare babies.
For we were healers with herbs and poultices
with our milk and careful fingers
long before they began learning to cut up
the living by making jokes at corpses.
For we were making sounds from our throats
and lips to warn and encourage the helpless
young long before schools were built
to teach boys to obey and be bored and kill.
